Today more than ever, water is vital for the existence of human beings. This March 22nd we celebrated its day, March 22, 1993 was declared as World Water Day.
All were invited to participate in activities related to water conservation and development, calling for the implementation of the recommendations of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development contained in Chapter 18 (Freshwater Resources) Agenda 21.
Humanity needs water
“A drop of water is flexible. A drop of water is powerful. A drop of water is more necessary than ever.
Water is an essential element of sustainable development. Water resources, and the range of services they provide, play a key role in reducing poverty, economic growth and environmental sustainability. Water is conducive to population well-being and inclusive growth and has a positive impact on the lives of billions of people by affecting issues such as food and energy security, human health, and the environment.
At present, more than 663 million people live without a supply of drinking water near their homes, forcing them to spend hours queuing or moving to distant sources, as well as dealing with health problems due to the consumption of contaminated water.”
In the city of Cusco, just as in other parts of the world, water forms a fundamental part of its inhabitants and of its culture. The different plazas of the city have at their center different water fountains. Thousands of kilometers of Inca aqueducts transferred water and so far many of these channels work perfectly.
But, because water gives goodness and benefits, it also has fury and can cause many disasters. At the moment, the north of Peru is suffering from the Coastal Niño problem. It has brought torrential rains and much flooding. Southern Child Phenomenon. Many people have stayed home and have disappeared because of the mud slides, flash floods, and rains that come stalking this region.
This important day, we value this resource and take care of it so that new generations still enjoy this resource that is life.
