A Morning in Cusco’s Most Visited Place

In Cusco, one of my favorite places is the Plaza de Armas. It has been a sacred place at least since the time of the Incas. It emanates a unique energy. It is surrounded by colonial Churches and colonnades. In the middle there is a garden, dressed with flowers and native trees that throw of fresh and pure air.

Cusco’s Plaza de Armas, its main square, was the administrative, religious, and cultural center of the great Inca Empire. Today it is still the center of Cusco. From its central paqcha (its fountain) above which the golden Inca glows, you can see many businesses, cafes, money change houses, travel agencies, restaurants, and more. What calls my attention, though, is the vegetation—the flowers and trees, the paqcha, and the people. They all shine with changing colors as the day goes on.

I love to go there mornings and wait for the first rays of sun to come. It is really fascinating to see the city wake up with a delicate sigh and with its sky painted in beautiful colors of blue, yellow, and orange.
