Allegorical Floats and the School of Fine Arts Make people Laugh and Ache

Cuzco’s calendar continues to turn like an ever-moving wheel. Today belongs to the School of Fine Arts, a renowned Cuzco institution. Each year it carries out its parade and the event is much awaited by the people of Cuzco who throng to see the art and enjoy the commentary in it on everyday life and politics in Cuzco.

People began to gather very early on the main square in order to have a good view of the entering floats, since this parade is one of allegorical floats. All the floats have a theme or message to give to the population on what is going on in Cuzco and in its culture. It all depends on those students who came up with and built the floats and their allegories.

They have been working for weeks if not months to think through and represent the message. They had to come up with a good allegory, find the right materials and techniques with which to carry it out. They needed much skill and commitment.

In this manner, brush stroke after brush stroke in a fusion with aerosol, their hands and faces also getting painted and sweating emotions, they created and finished their allegories and today we see them as they parade around the main square.

Besides the floats from the School of Fine Arts a few other institutions from other parts of Cuzco will also present allegories today.

They began at ten this morning. Many of the allegories were also accompanied by bands of musicians and dancers. It all depends on the organization and the message. In this way they create lots of joy and satisfaction in Cuzco’s public with their works of art.
