Cuzco’z Plaza Explodes with Joy at Midnight

Cuzco is a popular destination for New Years. On this last night of the year, it fills with a special magic that draws people from all over the world. As a result this celebration fills with manifestations of customs local and from elsewhere filled with color and delight.

In its intense night life, this city receive people with many different tastes, ideas, and knowledges. Its various streets, plazas, cafes, restaurants, discotheques and hotels await people for the celebration. They are decorated with baloons in their doorways and windows. In them and in the paving stones of the street Cuzco’s streets the color yellow stands out.

As the magical moment of change approaches a multitude appears wearing large, yellow plastic glasses that say 2013. Many will also have Christmas caps and hats also in yellow. With enthusiasm they await they coming of midnight to shout, to toast, and to receive the new year.

Although the festivities in Cuzco’s venues are grand, there is no doubt that the best place to receive the new year is in its Plaza de Armas.

In the lead up to that magical explosion of energy, the majority of the restaurants and bars around Cuzco, but especially on the Plaza prepare special dinners for visitors and locals alike who wish to pass the moment downtown. From early these places become an obligatory stop to begin a night of celebration. The different arts come together to offer spectacles of joyful music, dance, and good food.

From the Plaza one can see that the restaurants’ balconies are always full. People claim their spots early to eat and drink, laugh and converse, while waiting for midnight. They hope to have the best spot from which to see everything in the Plaza which fills with people waiting for midnight.

No matter where one stays, the Plaza is without doubt a center of activity for New Years. People from all over the world gather there.  All is dressed in color and celebration. Musicians play, people show off their juggling skills. And others simply wait, excitement filling them, wanting to receive the new year in the midst of the positive energy they can feel there as a hope for a good new year.

At midnight the Cathedral’s bells peel. People make a traditional round around the square, alms locked together, in a crazy and euphoric race to celebrate the New Year. At that moment the sky and ground fill with fireworks, noisemakers, yellow plastic leis, drink and thousands of persons with excessive joy.

The total joy overflows. For visitors it is a celebration like never before. People run and they shout in a babel of tongues while fire crackers explode at their feet. Cuzco’s main square explodes in hope an celebration.

For this date the people and facilities of Cuzco prepare to receive thousands of visitors who arrive with the hope of being here for the first day of 2013 under its aura of energy and mystery. Where ancient meets the brand new they come seeking a fabulous New Year.
