The Blanket Factory, A Story from Cuzco

Once upon a time a young man decided to open a business selling blankets. Every day, beginning early in the morning, he walked from house to house until the day closed. Some years passed and the young man slowly progressed.

His success led him to open a factory where he hired three helpers to continue with the work so that there would be more income. But quickly other businesses started with the same idea and they also grew. As a result, income started to diminish from all the competition. He almost went under.

Many people saw that he was depressed, without any energy. They saw him walking around here and there with strange objects. Nevertheless, one day his factory started to produce income again and had lots of sales. He hired more people and added more machines to make blankets.

It was unbelievable that now his blankets did not only sell there at the factory but were also beginning to sell in neighboring towns and cities. His business was growing more than any others.

This young man had made a pact with the devil so that his income would increase considerably. He decided to give his soul in exchange for fortune and success. Some years later his enterprise was known as the pioneer in the sale of blankets. And then, just like that, the guy disappeared.

For years no one knew what had happened to him. He had a big piece of land and a stone house. People would say that every night a rustic kerosene lamp would be lit and a lot of noise would be heard.

After almost 15 years people said they had seen the young man when they went to the blanket factory to see how its work was, how the machines worked, and many other things. They followed him back to the rock house where he opened the door, entered and then did not come out again.

Everyone waited and then began to be afraid. They decided to send two people into the house to see what was going on. They saw that the house was very old and that it had a basement. From there came a sound like coins banging against other coins. On arriving at the basement they found an old, thin man who looked like a troll who was counting all the coins in a pot of gold.

They saw him first but at that moment he began to shake and to foam at the mouth. They got out of there as fast as they could but before they could get out, unfortunately, one of them died. The other remained in bed, sick, for almost a year. No one knew what it was that afflicted him. They decided to call a healer to try to cure him. After some years the man got well and continued with his life.

The house of the young entrepreneur still stands. Some nights you will still see a flickering light from a lantern and hear sounds. The factory continues to function and blankets are still sold.

As recently as 2013 people said that they had seen the young businessman enter his factory to see how everything was going and once again he returned to his house. He is still there.
