Celebrate Peru’s Potatoes Today

Potatoes are one of the iconic products we have in Peru. From ancient times our ancestors cultivated them and enjoyed them just as we do today. Sine it has more than 2000 varieties in Peru, potatoes have become one of the most attractive products n our country. It appears in many commercials and in phrases like “Papea Peru”—“Peru potatoes” using potato as a verb.

Potatoes have high nutritional value. They are easy to prepare and from them come a very large variety of dishes and each pleases with its flavor. We can make dishes such as causa, potato pie (pastel de papa), stuffed potatoes (papa rellena), frozen and thawed potatoes with cheese (kachichuño) etc. It can also accompany a lot of other dishes whether it is boiled or fried.

Potatoes also have a high nutritional value. Their cost is not much. As a result, are within the reach of most people in the market. It is also a product we consume all the time and the varieties change over the course of the year depending on availability.

May 30th has been declared the National Day of the Potatoes following Supreme Resolution Nº 009-2005-AG. Its end is to strengthen the identity of the potato as a 100% Peruvian product and as a source of nutrition for the whole world.

Under the leadership of a group of institutions with the articulating effort of the Ministry of Agriculture and the International Potato Center, the CIP INCOPA, and the ADERS Peru, have consolidated an annual program of activities to celebrate this day.

As a result, the 30th of May we have to raise up the name of the potato and eat food made from it. We should also spread the word that May 30th is the National Day of the Potato.
