Images from the Celebration of the Virgin Asunta
This is a festivity carried out in the rural zones of the Cusco region. It draws many devotees from different parts of the country who venerate with intense faith, the Virgin Asunta year after year (The Virgin Asunta is the Virgin of the Assumption)
Thoughts of the Virgin Asunta rapidly take me to remember the towns of Calca and Coya which are place where the feast is strong and popular. My memories focus on a variety of breathtaking colors. I hear the music of the bands filling the air with noise, I see smiles and joy in the people who live these fascinating traditions to the measure of the many dance troupes.
Each year the fiesta lasts for five days, from the 14th to the 18th of August. It is filled with pomp and joy in the company of a living culture that is passed from generation to generation The celebration begins with a serenata and on the central day a procession of the Virgin and dance troupes, followed on the final day by a saying goodbye to the feast for another year. They are accompanied by much joy and movement among everyone in the town.
This year was my first chance to experience these religious fiestas. Year after year I had heard my friends and family talk of their experiences and tell stories that filled me with enthusiasm and anticipatory joy. I could not wait to be there.
It was a great experience to be part of the celebration. My passion for photography inspired me to freeze some moment in images to share it with you. As you go down the page you will gain a bit of appreciation for the celebration in honor of the Virgin Asunta.
