Dance and Unity among Regions in Cusco
Every day people carry out their activities and interact with others without any distinctions of region of city. More and more people come to our city to form part of our society and of the new culture we are building each day.
Much time has passes since many of these people have established themselves here, just like others, and now form part of our society. As a result they are our people and contribute their grain of sand to our new society.
Commerce is something carried out strongly by the people of the altiplano, the high plateau. Most of the people from there who have integrated into our city are merchants and if we marked them on a map we would say they are found in different zones of our city. One of the largest areas of residents from the altiplano is in San Sebastian.
Many people in Cusco who may not have knowledge of this integration make senseless criticisms while claiming to defend their culture or an ancient culture. They do not realize that the new culture being built is richer in diverse ways.
In our festivities you can hear these critiques. A clear examples is found in music and dance. In Cusco you can enjoy not only the traditional dances from here but also ones from the altiplano, such as sayas, morenadas, tinkus, and more. They enchant people because of the melodies and steps they require.
Just as in our traditional dances these are also danced with fervor and strength. You want to be felt and to say that you form part of it. As a result the critiques are not acceptable because the new culture being constructed day by day permits the integration of all people with no distinctions.
These conflicts over culture do not just happen in our city but in all the regions of the country, the coast, highlands, and jungle. By coming together we unite people and their communities to form part of the same society and to live with dignity.
