A Simple Day from San Cristobal Overlook (Walter Coraza Morveli)
Every day, from the Plaza de Armas of Lima, the capital city’s main square, the panoramic buses make an enchanting run. They go down different streets and show cultural attractions until they reach the hill of San Cristobal with its overlook. From there you can contemplate the entire city of Lima from one place.
Also known as the Cerro San Cristobal, or San Cristobal Hill, it is located by the Rimac River. Besides being an apu, a revered mountain deity, where those who arrive make offerings—even though the apu has been replaced by a cross that was imposed by the Catholics.
From the Plaza de Armas you can take the Urbanito bus. It will cost you ten soles and they leave every 30 minutes. Their barkers will offer the ride constantly. When you arrive at the top of the hill you have fifteen minutes to take all the photos you wish. But it is a short time to enjoy the place and for that reason I recommend you take a private car of rent one. A taxi will usually cost you 20/S to 30/S.
My cousins and I made the trip by bus. It was fascinating to go through the streets. We saw many different graffitis that showed part of Lima’s culture. It took us about two hours to do the whole trip. I recommend you be careful especially with your belongs. The place is not very safe. If you take a cell phone or a camera, be very careful or you might not be returning with it. Otherwise you can enjoy a marvelous experience.
