It is said that sorcerers or people who practice black magic first must pay a heavy price. They are converted into a carisiri by the demon. The carisiri is a dog whose destiny is to roam the high and icy plains, the pampas, where there are no people. Hey must first pay this harsh price in order to return to be human again.
They wander the high lands suffering hunger and thirst and hoping that someone will come close so they can eat him. As a result, animals and even person are afraid of this person-dog. He is a kind of condenado or condemned one we could say.
Once a whole class of students who graduated in 2009 decided to take a trip to enjoy their last year in school. On returning from Arequipa, in the high pampas where there was nothing by jichu (fierce wild grass) and where cold reigned their vehicle stopped around 2 in the morning so the driver perform his necessities outdoors.
The bus driver’s aid was talking with some of the students and for ten minutes the driver did not return. When he finally came back he was pale and vomiting. He started the bus like a soul heading to the devil and they continued on their way.
He was mad at the assistant because he did not go with him when he went into the dark. He said that he had been peeing when a black dog came up and then disappeared. He suddenly remembered his parents and how much they loved him.
As a result he found strength and ran towards the bus to start it and drive off, away from the danger.
People say that sometime the carisiri will plant himself squarely in the middle of a road to stop cars and buses. For that reason there are many accidents that take place on these high and isolated roads. The carisiri causes them.
The bus’s driver said that if something appears in the road it is better to run over it that to stop so that way it can do no harm to anyone and evil things will not continue.
