To their own tunes, the saints entered into Cuzco’s plaza on the way to the Cathedral where they spent the night in the company of Cuzco’s Holy Patron, the Lord of Temblors.
Crowds of the city’s residents lined their paths to catch site of them and to watch the dancers that accompanied them, along with their bearers, sponsors, and confraternities. Many brocaded and colorful standards preceded them and followed them on their path.
Like giants on their palanquins, these non-human beings who are so important in Cuzco’s religious and social life came out of their chapels on the shoulders of young men who visibly strained to carry the heavy carriage and the massive saints in acts of devotion and ayni, reciprocity.
The drums pounded, their rhythm carrying for block while the bands play. An energy of enthusiasm and passion filled the square, visible in the faces of those watching. Here are some photographs of the day.
