Photos of a Gathering on the Octave of Corpus Christi, the Cacharpariy

After a week in Cuzco’s cathedral, the Saints fo its traditional neighborhoods begin their processions home today. It is the Octave of Corpus Christi, the eighth day after the feast when the cacharpaii, or retreat from the festive center is performed.

During the week, it is said the saints remained in the cathedral like a family gathering, replete with gossip, decisions, and politics as they discussed and debated the state of the City of Cuzco and its neighborhoods, as well as negotiated status among themselves.

The Saints’ ´physical togetherness stands as an icon of the whole that the city is assumed to be, and it only occurs once a year during this most important of feasts.

In what follows, we present a remembrance through photos of the Saints’ processions to the Cathedral on the day when they begin their return to their home chapels and neighborhoods
