Sweets and Desserts for Halloween in Cuzco

The Day of Witches falls on the 31st of October each year. For this day many people decorate their houses and especially stores so that they might have more sales. In the last years Halloween has become very popular among Cuzco’s youth and adults. The streets of the city’s downtown are closed to vehicular traffic and become a sea of people.

Beginning around 3 or 4 in the afternoon, children begin to go around asking for candy while teenagers and youths go to some party organized by their friends to enjoy a long night.

For all of these parties and such people needs decorations. Even their food is decorated in accord with the theme of the day. Cakes come as pumpkins or bats and spiders. Cupcakes come in all forms. You will also see cookies with manjar, or caramelized milk. All of these will be decorated with Halloween figures.

For some weeks already our sweet shops and stores have been offering for sale special candies and cookies for the occasion. You will find bat shaped candies. They also come like bones or skeletons. Some candies are filled with something that looks like blood. Gumi-type candies come in all shapes for the season. Children beg their parents to buy these for them so they can enjoy this celebration.

Not long ago many fewer people celebrated Halloween. People spent the evening at home with their family. Not many decorations or special candies and sweets or desserts were available.

Because of movies, social networks, media and other influences this day has become a fiesta day. Hundreds or thousands of people dressed in costumes, both they and their pets, will be seen on the streets of our city this Halloween.
