In October Fruit Abounds in Cuzco

The other day I was walking down the street when I suddenly saw a whole group of people gathered around a stand where they sold papayas. Just like all the other people I also got close to buy some of the fresh fruit. I went home and opened a papaya to eat. It was so delicious, sweet and juicy, that I decided to go back and buy more. Later my father told me that it is now the season for papayas, just as it is for oranges, mandarins, bananas, strawberries, star fruit, mangos, kiwi, and peaches.

October is high season for the fruit that is most consumed in Cuzco. Beginning now the season continues into November, December, and January where it ends. During these months people go the the markets and fairs to buy fruit to put in their children’s lunch boxes, make juice, as well as fruit salads and more.

The biggest markets in Cuzco for fruit, where it first arrives, are the Vino Canchón and the General Buendía markets. The latter market is more known as Cascaparo. These are the largest markets in Cuzco and they are followed by the the popular markets of San Pedro, Ttio, Rosaspata, San Blas, and so on.  In them can be found all the varieties of fruit of which abound this season.

During this season the trucks arrive filled with fruit to the large markets. People got here from very early in the morning to un load the fruit. The drivers or merchants often contract with people to take the fruit off the trucks and distribute it to the smaller markets throughout the city where the fruit can be sold to Cuzco’s public.

The fruit comes from the city of Quillabamba, known as the place of eternal summer, Yanatile, and Lares, Cuzco’s lower valleys.  The fruit is grown their and then sent to the city of Cuzco as well as to other parts of Peru and even as export abroad.

The period of growth and abundance is about to arrive.

If you go to one of these markets do not forget to buy the delicious fruit so that you can enjoy their amazing taste.
