In Honor of the Lord of Qoyllorriti

The festival of the Lord of Qoyllorriti is one of the most important in the calendar of activities for the city of Cusco. The turnout for its date is a large number of people who make the walk to Qoyllurriti year after year.

The festival of the Lord of Qoyllorriti is not only lived directly in the same place where the image is. In many villages that are devotees hold a celebration for the festival of the Lord of Qoyllorriti annually as well. All the people who participate in this celebration also bring their ancestral traditions to bear.

The town of Cacawara of the province of Anta of the city of Cusco celebrates the festival of the Lord of Qoyllorriti in a big way. In most of the villages the people in charge of this party are the mayordomos, local people who rotate to take on this responsibility year after year and continue maintaining this tradition.

Every group holds a mass in honor of the lord of Qoyllorriti. This Mass is held in Quechua since the vast majority of people who live in this place are Quechua speakers. All the town participates. On the top of a hill is the chapel though the mass is performed outdoors. Both snow and eagles are present in this celebration as a result.

With band sand dancers they parade to the main square of this place to be able to give the position of mayordomo to new people. After giving the charge to a new couple, they head on to a house where they celebrate the cargo, the charge. Here, they enjoy a lunch with the whole town. Strawberry chicha is the drink that predominates as they quench their thirst.

A platter filled with dishes of roast pork come out to be served to everyone distinction. Once finished, they head to the square again and be partakers of the rooster tipiy or the grapping of roosters.

This tradition consists in hanging a rooster and with horses the one that has more skill will manage to grab the rooster first. All this is accompanied by gifts for the assistants, wheat loaves and oranges that are put on a stick with two or three points and the name Ramos is distributed to all those who attend.

It is not over yet; the bullfight begins. All the people gather to be present. This lasts until 5 pm where again everyone is invited to the house to continue with the party.

The feast of Qoyllurriti is not only celebrated in the sanctuary of Qoyllorriti but in many towns where they have devotion to the Lord of Qoyllorriti.
