Images of Yesterday’s Procession of the Lord of Temblors
Yesterday was a splendid day in which the Taytacha, the Lord of Temblors, made his annual procession from the Cathedral through the streets of Cuzco. It was a day of great devotion and profound Catholic faith which begins the most intense liturgical time in Cuzco, Holy Week.
The much awaited procession began around 2:30 pm when the Lord began his triumphant exit through the massive Cathedral doors. He then began his annual path blessing special altars set up along his path for the occasion as he passed. Thousands of people with profound faith accompanied him and awaited his forgiveness and blessing.
The afternoon became a marvel in the moment when a light rain fell. People called it the blessing of our Holy Patron, just like most years.
Our streets were dressed with devotion. The traditional colonial houses adorned their balconies with flowers and purple and red cloth in order toggle a special welcome to the Taytacha, the “Dear Father”. Incense and the songs in Quechua of the chainas women’s choir further made his procession transcendent and filled it with harmony
After finishing his path and blessing along the way various churches and altars, the Lord returned once again to the Plaza de Armas where it was packed with faithful awaiting his arrival in order to receive his blessing for all Cusqueños in the central space of the city. All surrounding streets as well as the plaza were filled to capacity.
At approximately 8 pm the Cathedral’s bells and the city’s fire sirens began to wait announcing the blessing the the Lord of Temblors let fall on his faithful people. Then he entered the Cathedral to rest.
It was an amazing experience this year. You felt the deep faith and the Catholic traditions of our city that still are strong. Below you will enjoy various photos from yesterday’s procession.
