Huayna Picchu and Its Attractions
Huaynapicchu is one of the three sacred mountains that surround the citadel of Machupicchu, in the Quechua language it means “Young Mountain”.
To access it you need to pay your entrance fee which is 15 dollars. This must be done 2 months or more in advance because there is a lot of demand and only 400 people can enter a day, 200 in the 7 business hours 00 to 8:00 a.m. and another 200 people from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Its access starts from the so-called sacred rock where the control gate is. To get in you have to show the entry ticket to the citadel as well as entry to the mountain and write your name, passport number and time of entry. This is in order to have more control in place.
The route is well demarcated. It has white granite stone staircases and ropes to avoid accidents and it has appropriate signage so it is impossible to get lost. Th ascent takes about 45 to 50 min and from the citadel it has about 400 meters of climb.
Because of the enclosures that were found on the top of the mountain and the strategic location it is said that Huaynapicchu erved as a monitoring and control center.
From the top of the mountain, you have a spectacular panoramic view. You can see the entire citadel of Machu Picchu, the Urubamba river that surrounds the mountain, and the route used by the buses that go up from the town of Machupicchu to the citadel.
This mountain has another attraction that is “the temple of the Moon”. This is the name that was given after the arrival of Hiram Bingham. It is not known what his original name was.
This temple is built inside a cave, which has trapezoidal niches in which the mummies of the dead Incas were probably placed to participate in the ceremonies.
Today, climbing the mountain of Huynapicchu has become very popular, as it is the touch of adventure that can be added to the visit of the Citadel.
