The huaylia Chumbivilcana is a cultural tradition that includes the genres of music and dance. Its peculiar characteristic comes from the result of a series of processes of blending, which with the passing of time reached a great importance in different dates of the festive calendar and of ritual practices in different regions of the provinces of Cusco, Apurímac, Ayacucho, Huancavelica and Junín .
In addition, the execution of the Huaylia Chumbivilcana in both music and dance is unique and also transcendental. For this reason, the Ministry of Culture declared the Huaylia Chumbivilcana as Cultural Patrimony of the Nation.
In music they use a series of instruments, the most important are the string instruments that have the most presence and are clearly distinguished. The guitar, mandolin, bandurria and depending on the region the violin and harp are used to produce the sounds that distinguish Huaylia.
The the melody is only the human voice; women give a very feminine traditional touch of these regions, especially for the high voice. The traditional language used in Huaylia is the mother tongue of these regions, Quechua.
In the dance people wear colorful and original costumes. Women wear colored skirts, such as blue or light blue, red, pink, etc. as well as a jacket and hat that matches the other clothes.
The men wear carahuatas or leg coverings that rise to cover a little more than the knees with various decorations such as horses, horseshoes. They also wear a plaid shirt and over it a leather vest or also with details. On their heads they use a huacollo or a type of colorful knitted cap and on this they use, depending on the area, deer heads, bull horns, etc. that reflect the power and strength of a man.
There are also Takanakuy events where personal problems are resolved with fists and those who participate are men, women, and even children. To the rhythm of the Huaylia Chumbivilcana these events begin.
It is said that when the Huaylia Chumbivilcana sounds it quickly impregnates itself in the bodies of the opponents and fills them with courage and strength so that they are ready either for victory or to lose.
In this way the Huaylia Chumbivilcana has a great importance in the Andes of Peru.
People are proud of this tradition and actively participate in all festivities of the calendar to preserve it and share it with the whole world.
