Some years ago as is customary all the saints and virgins came out of the churches in procession accompanied by all their devotees. Often the course was long. San Sebastian is an example. His followers must make a very long trek. The same for San Jeronimo who come for miles from the town of the same name on foot to the Plaza Mayor, the great plaza, of Cusco.
After all their trek, the saints entered the Cathedral of the city in order to rest after the long path they had taken, while their followers also went home or gathered together to celebrate and also rest. One man who was responsible that day for cleaning the cathedral was kept lake in order to carry out the
tasks.
When in his work he arrived at the place where the saints were he heard a lot of noise. He thought maybe the priests and some of those responsible for the saints had stayed late to speak about whatever needed covering. He continued with his work because he was tired. After a few hours, when midnight was approaching, he was filled with curiosity to know who it was who was talking.
He saw huge shadows and got frightened, at first. He wanted to turn right around, but his curiosity was greater and so he slowly got closer to the edge of one of the walls to see what was going on. He saw the saints all gathered together and talking with each other. They were complaining about their faithful and their bad actions in the face of the festivity at hand.
Suddenly, the child held by San Cristobal saw him and asked “what are you doing here.”
The man fell to the ground as if he had fainted and entered a deep sleep until the next day. The next morning when people found him they also noticed that the saints were not in the places they were supposed to be. The man told them what he had seen. Some believed him and others did not.
Every year the saints get together to give a critique of the actions of their faithful and to share it with the other saints They create, in this way, a conversation among them all.
