Giant Figures, Fireworks, and Music Claim the Plaza Today

Today, the 20th of June, is celebrated the great night of Lights and Sounds. This event, carried out every year, will begin at 6 pm. Some hours before, people in charge of the event will put up the stage for several invited musical groups to perform their best songs for the population of Cusco.

This morning the School of Fine Arts from Cusco will also present their parade of dolls and floats that represent the city and its realities, sometimes with satire and biting commentary on current events. These are giant figures in which the students of the arts school show their abilities by creating giant images of paper, paint, cardboard, and glue. After this comes one of the most important events of Cusco’s year, its light and music show that will draw tens of thousands of people to the plaza.

At around 5 pm people will begin arriving, both locals and international people wills tart to come to the plaza to claim a place. Some will be there along with their whole family while others will go with their friends to celebrate by dancing and drinking beer, pisco, rum, and other alcoholic beverages that will be sold in the plaza.

When it begins to show its spectacular play of lights everyone will be looking at the sky from wherever they are. The fireworks will last for a while. People love to watch these fireworks from up where the White Christ stands near Saqsayhuaman.

Once the fireworks have finished then the sound part of the evening begins, the music show. It will be the responsibility of invited groups who will take the stage one after the other and thrill the capital of Tawantinsuyo. They will make it an unforgettable night for Cusco’s people and their guests.

Furthermore on this very special day people will carry out a task that has become typical. It consists in selling various alcoholic beverages, such as mixing rum and soft drinks. Children, young people and adult men and women will carry out this task to earn money for their home.
