Cutichikuy Song: Fun Counterpoint Between Ladies and Gentlemen of the Sierra

This is a very beautiful popular song these days that represents the culture in the Andes and the counterpoint between women and men. It is up-tempo and very funny indeed. The song is performed by Niel Pablo and Simeon Escobar in the Quechua language.

This song was published on YouTube on March 5, 2017. It was originally recorded during the carnival festivities in Parcco Alto, Huancavelica. It has now obtained more than 3,057,055 views and has generated a boom on the radio and in different media and social networks. It has a nice melody of the huayno musical genre from Peruvian folklore and it is a song that has gained a lot of popularity among the people of the mountains with its very funny word game.

Counterpoints represent culture, relationships and interactions between men and women. They use the music to challenge each other as a group. From joke to joke they give it to each other hard and cause people to shake with laughter.

The video shows a contest between women and men. The young ladies are seen happily singing the carnivals of their land while they throw down challenges to the men. It is really beautiful, to see how they share, they enjoy life. It’s something beautiful!

The girls, of course very beautiful, cheerful, brave and intelligent. They are seen wearing their typical clothes with colorful dresses. They dance and sing with all their beauty within a green landscape and blue sky. The interpretation of each group improvising the song’s lyrics excites us and shows the great joy of those who play and sing. As if to put the cherry on the cake, the drunk man in blue overalls also contributed by saying “Benitez family for all life.”

It is well understood that the counterpoint is directed towards mothers-in-law. The women sing: “return your son, to your long-haired son, because I do not want your son who even has legs like a bow, even his eggs (testicles) are dry” and the men respond: “return your daughter that is too skinny almost without a butt, her breasts are dry”.

The first time I heard this song, it was a very fun experience for me. I found it very engaging, with a lot of rhythm and engaging taste. The sound of the harp always caught my attention because of its beautiful chords as the basis of the song. Above all, the lyrics made me laugh and laugh a lot.

For those who understand the Quechua language, the song is really hilarious. Those who have the privilege of knowing Quechua can understand and interpret it. For others who do not know Quechua is a shame, because they do not understand the mischief and Andean humor.

How beautiful the challenge between women and men, these courageous Peruvians who interpret this beautiful encounter of huayno in our mountains at more than 3,900 meters above sea level. Being there is brave because of the cold and wet. Those women are very strong.

The truth is that I loved Cutichicuy. I congratulate you for your healthy fun, your joy and the preservation of your customs. The song is a success because it touches our feelings. I hope that these customs continue to be maintained and especially the Quechua language.
