Cruz Velakuy, the Vigil of the Cross in Cusco
Every May 3rd in the city of Cusco people celebrate the Day of the Cross. There is a great party in the whole town of Cuzco. Catholics take their crosses in processions throughout the city, accompanied by dancers, musicians, bands Cusco and food galore.
During the night of May 2nd, the eve of the feast, Catholics sit with their crosses in vigil all night until the next day, some praying and others drinking hot punch.
On the main day the processions of the crosses from each neighborhood or district are realized each with their own route but all making joyful noise.
This religious festivity continues through today, the 4th of May. Through out the city there is general celebration. Of the individual crosses , that which rises in the Waka of the Teteqaqa has the greatest presence although the crosses of the temples of San Francisco, San Cristóbal, Saqsaywaman, and other districts also attain importance.
