Celebrating the Anniversary of Puerto Maldonado – Madre de Dios

The city of Puerto Maldonado, located in south eastern Peru, is the capital of the department of Madre de Dios and of the province of Tambopata. It was founded on July 10, 1902 by Don Juan Villalta in honor of the explorer Faustino Maldonado who explored the jungle and traveled the Madre de Dios and Tambopata Rivers during the rubber boom.

This place was also known because gold deposits were found and later wood industries appeared. These two activities are still carried out at present, although the export of Brazil nuts has also increased.

In the beginning Puerto Maldonado was isolated. Already in the year 2010 with the construction of the Inter Oceanic Highway its economy improved more, because this road joins it with the neighboring country of Brazil.
