Fathers’ Day Celebrated in Cusco

Fathers’Day is a day dedicated to fathers to honor the influence of father’s in the lives of their children. The love of fathers for their children is recognized and celebrated by their children and by other people who recognize the efforts of fathers.

That is why on every third Sunday in June people celebrate Fathers’ Day. Since it falls on a weekend, Cusco’s culture commands that it be spent in family and with friends and others around you.

The godparents of the sons or daughters visit homes to toss mistura, confetti, on the head of the father and to have a good breakfast together, whether of hot chocolate with milk or ponche of habas with a little bit of alcohol to warm up the morning.

At midday, as is the custom for events like this, people prepare delicious typical dishes from the city of Cusco such as oven baked cuy (guinea pig), stuffed rocoto peppers, or a baked fettuccini (tallarín al horno), an adobo, etc. Of course there must always be a delicious fresh ground hot sauce we call uchukuta in every family`s table.

In the week prior to this day all the schools of our city honor fathers whether teachers, workers, or student’s fathers. Children perform dances, poetry, songs, etc. In honor of fathers.

On this day different musical groups will perform around town in places such as the beer garden, the Coliseo Cerrado, the Casa de la Juventud, or the Uriel Garcia Coliseum, all in honor of Fathers.

Today, the 21st of June 2015 we will all celebrate with out fathers and we will value their labor and the things they do for us and for our brothers and sisters.
