Last week, workers for the Municipality of Ollantaytambo in Cusco’s Sacred Valley, were surprised to find remains of an Inca altar while performing routine maintenance and cleaning on the banks of the Vilcanota River.
It had been thought that these remains with archeological value had been destroyed with work was done to build the Via de Evitamiento road in Ollantaytambo in 2014. The discovered altar weighs 20 tons and is 2.5 meters in length and 1 meter in width.
According to archeologists and historians the remains give valuable witness to the Inca cult of water.
The population of Cusco hopes the archeological find will be fully recovered and placed in value (restored) and that the opposite does not happen as it has in many other cases that it is lost in forgetfulness.
