The Most Beautiful Churches to Visit in Peru This Christmas

We are at the beginning of the Christmas holidays. Cities throughout Peru are filled with lights, joy, toys, merchants, and more. For many tourists and visitors this time becomes a unique opportunity to visit the different churches that exist throughout Peru and that are filled during this season with religiosity by the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, in addition to being great architectural and cultural works.

Peru has an large number of churches and cathedrals. It is almost impossible not to run into a church in each of the destinations of this country. Among all these we have a special group that are considered by many to be the most beautiful both for their architecture and for their history.

Convent of Santo Domingo, Cusco

This convent is considered one of the most important temples of Peru. Built on the Inca temple “Coricancha” in the year 1633, today it is visited by many tourists due to the original Inca foundations and walls on which it is built . This temple is located in the heart of the historic center of the city of Cusco on Santo Domingo Street 2 blocks from the main square of Cusco and has visiting hours from 8am to 5pm.

Church of Santa Catalina Cajamarca

This is one of the most beautiful churches in the department of Cajamarca known by the name of Cajamarca Cathedral and is considered since 1972 as one of the Historical Monuments of Peru. Its construction began approximately in 1665 and was considered as a cathedral in the year of 1682. The Church is located in the Jr. Cruz de Piedra in the center of the main square of Cajamarca. Its visiting hours are from 8am until 11am and 4pm until 6pm.

San Francisco Lima Convent

One of the most imposing temples in the city of Lima, thanks to its large system of catacombs that cover a large part of the city center, the construction of San Francisco began in the year of 1542 although at that time it was only a small chapel. In the years of 1556 and 1560 the temple was remodeled and expanded. For the year of 1687 it was rebuilt due to the earthquake that shook the city of Lima. It is located in the Jirón Lampa of the Lima and its visiting hours are from 9:30 am until 5:30 pm.

San Pedro Apostle of Andahuaylillas, Cusco

This is one of the most beautiful churches in all of Peru due to its impressive paintings scattered throughout the temple, from the entrance to the temple stage. It was built in the 1572 under the name of Antawaylla “Pradera Cobriza” on the foundations of an Inca construction. Later the temple was renamed Andahuaylillas. This temple is located approximately one hour from the city of Cusco toward the south, in the town of Andahuaylillas. Its visiting hours are from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm.
